World Wetland Day

On the occasion of the World Wetland Day, a team of the LIFE13 NAT/PL/000050 accepted an invitation for a conference entitled the “Marshes and Towns”, organised by the faculty of Biology of the University of Warsaw on 3rd February 2018.

A programme of the celebrations of the World Wetland Days included three thematic blocks. The first referred to the wetlands in the city; effectiveness of the spatial planning system in the protection of the wetlands, irrigation solutions. The second corresponded to the areas included by the operations according to the Ramsar Convention. During the meeting, a representative of the Ramsar Convention Secretariat grandly awarded the certificates to the new areas to the National Ramsar Secretariat. It was also presented a review of the domestic and foreign events that summarized the operations related to the wetlands executed in 2017. It was not just short of a speech of the representatives of the Save the Rivers Coalition, who informed about the current situation and the threats to the rivers in Poland. The third thematic block was entirely dedicated to the Warsaw wetlands.

During a long break, the employees of the Biebrza National Park presented the hitherto activities and achievements in the projects included the restoration of the hydrological system in the Middle Basin of the Biebrza Valley. The neighbouring stands were organised, inter alia, by the other teams involved in implementing the LIFE projects. One of them was the LIFE KAMPINOS WETLANDS PL project - Wetlands conservation and restoration in “Puszcza Kampinoska” LIFE12 NAT/PL/000084, which main goal constituted, similarly as in the event of our project, the restoration of the wetlands.
